About Alviano

The ancient medieval village of Alviano stands on a hill, set among evocative ravines. It reached its splendour between 1400 and 1500 with Bartolomeo di Alviano, a talented leader, who was known throughout Europe, both for his war exploits as Captain of Ventura, and for his relationships with the most powerful families of the time. He carried out the reconstruction and expansion of the ancient castle built around the year 1000 by Count Offredo. In 1654, the fortress was purchased by Donna Olimpia Maidalchini in Pamphili, sister-in-law of Pope Innocent X. Finally; in 1920 it was acquired by the Municipality from the descendants of the Doria Pamphili.

Inside the village it is possible to admire the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (15th century), adorned with a precious panel by Nicolò Alunno, representing the Assumption of the Madonna surrounded by glorifying angels. Also interesting is a fresco by Giovanni Antonio de ‘Sacchis, known as Pordenone, commissioned in 1516 by the widow of Bartolomeo d’Alviano, Pantasilea Baglioni, representing the noblewoman and the Madonna with Saints.
