The Fossil Forest of Dunarobba was brought to light in the late 1970s, from a clay quarry used for the manufacture of bricks. The remains of the approximately fifty trunks of gigantic conifers currently visible are an extraordinary and rare testimony of the environment in this part of the Italian peninsula during the Plio-Pleistocene (between 3 and 2 million years ago), when majestic forests grew in a marshy area located on the edge of the Tiberino Basin: this was an immense lake system that extended over most of present-day Umbria. The conservation of trunks in a living position and the almost complete retention of the characteristics of the original wood make it a unique naturalistic “monument”, of great scientific importance. The visit to the Forest is combined with the visit to the Museum of Plant Paleontology, which houses a permanent exhibition of mollusc fossils, both from lake and marine environment, insects, vertebrates (parts of rhinoceros, bovids and various cervids, as well as an ancient elephant tusk) and remains of plants. Furthermore, the Museum is situated in a structure that serves also as an Info point for all visitors. Inside there is a conference room, two classrooms, a ticket office and a bookshop. Outside there are: an Arboretum, the Museum of the Piero Gauli Study Center and the Sequoia Emporium, a small grocery store where only selected Umbrian products are sold.
